CHAPTER 23

Charlie

“Ms. Bennett, I’m Nurse Gunter. I’ll be your nurse tonight, taking over for Nurse Brady. If you need anything, please let me know.” She prints her name on the dry erase board on the wall. “Try to sleep.”

“I will. Thank you.” I smile at her.

“Mr. Ford, I understand that you’re staying with Ms. Bennett. Is there anything I can get you?”

He smiles. “No, thank you. My guys will take care of me.” He glances at me. “As long as she’s good, I’ll be fine.”

I finally settle down after seeing everyone, including Taylor. I close my eyes and think about the last few hours. I don’t know how Ace did it, but he hasn’t left my side the whole time. Bryce brought him a bag and his guitar, and he’s sat in the corner of my private room while family members visited. Mr. and Mrs. Ford were so nice, even though I kept Haleigh’s identity a secret all these years. They understand it was for her protection as well as their privacy. The world would pay big bucks to get a candid shot of Ace’s love child. A California wildfire has nothing on how fast gossip spreads. I sigh, Ace will have to leave us at some point, and I’m not looking forward to it. Maybe he’s right, Haleigh and I should go with him. But what will happen to Zack? Should I move my office? My eyes droop as sleep tries to take over my body.

“Ace?”

“Yeah, baby?”

“In case I fall asleep—thank you. Thank you for taking care of me. This room . . . protecting Haleigh . . . just everything.”

He kisses my forehead. “My pleasure.”

I watch him fiddle with a pencil and notebook, wondering what he’s doing. His brows scrunch as he taps the pencil in a rhythm. It’s melodic and my body relaxes to the beat as my eyelids grow heavier.

Even though I don’t remember falling asleep, my body stirs awake to Ace strumming his guitar. His voice is low, and I can barely make out the words.

“Hear me please, I’m a drowning man

Been missing the moments to hold your hand

Please let me in, I’ll never let you go

My confessions, to my baby girl.

Hmm . . .”

He plays a few bars of the melody as he hums. I watch him sway to the music before his brows scrunch and he picks up his pencil again. He’s deep in thought, and I don’t dare mess with his creative streak, so I watch and listen. I’ve only seen him write music once before. It’s as if he’s a million miles away. He starts again as his voice lulls me back to a peaceful slumber.
